Undercover cop takes over suspect’s ‘marijuana’ sales

first_imgCANYON COUNTRY – It proved a double-barreled sting for sheriff’s deputies who arrested a Boron man, found he was selling marijuana behind a Canyon Country Ralphs market and took over his business using fake weed, authorities said. Sales were brisk and 14 were arrested – plus one more who decided to tag the grocery store walls while his teenage friends were buying the phony marijuana, according to a sheriff’s report. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, an undercover sheriff’s deputy sold the homemade, harmless version of the herb behind the Ralphs supermarket on White Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Road, the report said. Customers showed up and, one by one, were taken into custody. Ten adults and four juveniles were arrested on suspicion of attempting to possess marijuana and one of the adults also faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. A fifth juvenile was arrested on suspicion of vandalism for painting graffiti on the wall while he was waiting for his two friends to complete their buys, the report said. Berkley, 46, was booked on suspicion of marijuana sales at the Lancaster sheriff’s station. Michael Nobbs named India hockey coach

first_imgThe Indian men’s hockey team is in Australian hands for the next five years with Michael Nobbs appointed coach till the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.Michael Nobbs comes out of the SAI office after his appointment on Wednesday. K. AsifDutchman Roelant Oltmans was considered by many to be the frontrunner for the job, but the authorities chose Nobbs based on the argument that the Australian style of hockey was similar to India’s and hence will not involve much change at this crucial juncture.”It was a unanimous decision from Hockey India, Sports Authority of India ( SAI), government observers and a few eminent former players,” SAI director general Desh Deepak Verma said on Wednesday. The Australian will be paid 10,000 Australian dollars per month. For the first time, there will be a performance-based incentive for the coach. If India qualify for next year’s London Olympics, Nobbs’s salary will be hiked by 10 per cent.”If we do well at the Olympics, the contract will be revised after further discussion and negotiations,” Verma said.Nobbs’s only previous international coaching assignment has been with the Japanese women’s team a few years ago. He has a business back home and is the coaching director for Western Australia, besides being at the helm of Rockingham Redbacks in the national league.”We hired him on the basis of his experience and organisational capabilities. His bio- data and the presentation he made were also impressive,” the SAI director general said.Oltmans, who has guided the Netherlands to World Cup and Olympic glory in both men’s and women’s hockey, is said to have set ideas about structure, set-pieces and efficiency. He may have asked for drastic changes which the authorities were not keen on.advertisement”The most important factor in his appointment was that the Australian style is similar to ours and suits us. If Australia can be on top playing this style, why can’t India,” Verma said. The national camp starts in Bangalore on Friday, and Nobbs will join it on Sunday. After attending it for a week, he will go back home to wind things up and return at month- end, Hockey India secretary general Narinder Batra said.”Accommodation will also be provided to the coach and if he wants he can bring his family here also,” he said, adding that money was not a factor at all in the choice of coach.”With the Olympic qualifiers approaching, we did not want to make drastic changes to the style with players having to take up unfamiliar positions. Money was not a consideration.” Verma said Nobbs will stay even if India did not manage to seal an Olympic berth.”Qualifying for London is our goal, but even if we don’t manage that, our past experience has shown that we need to have a long- term engagement with a coach,” he said.Nobbs will bring with him exercise physiologist David John, who will be paid 5,000 Australian dollars per month, with Hockey India contributing towards that amount. “Some others may also join later as per requirement,’ Verma added. In another significant announcement, the new coach will also be part of the selection committee and will have a major say.Nobbs, who was part of the Aussie side that finished fourth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, admitted that it would be his most high- profile assignment yet but denied there was any pressure on him. “There are no reservations. I have been promised a free hand,” he said.”It is not only about me. The administration, players, system and public support need to pull together to make India successful in both the long and the short term. I would need inputs from everyone.”About his roadmap, Nobbs said: “I first need to know where we are starting from. I have seen India play but need to know the individual personalities.A lot of processes need to be followed and detailed analysis done. “Technique is not a difficult matter as the Indian and Australian styles are similar.”Nobbs added that even if India fails in their short- term goal of Olympic qualification, it will be his endeavour that the team keeps improving. He said he had personal reasons to take up the job as well. “My first hockey coaches were Indians and Australia has been influenced by Indian hockey a lot.”There are a lot of Anglo- Indians in the Australian coaching system and I have many Indian friends. I love Indian culture and this is my way of giving something back,” Nobbs added.advertisementErstwhile coach Harendra Singh may be back as the assistant or may be put in charge of the development, junior or sub-junior squad. More LGBTQ representation than ever before but TV has failed queer women

first_img LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Last year, GLAAD noted the deaths of several queer female characters and called on broadcast networks to ensure that lesbian and bisexual women on TV fared better the following year. But this year’s report cites at least 12 lesbian and bisexual female characters who have been killed off broadcast shows since January, and says more than 25 queer female characters have been killed across all platforms this year. The report directly references the “Bury Your Gays” trope, a term activists used this year while protesting the deaths of lesbian and bisexual characters, who often see violent deaths or meet tragic ends following happy moments.Fans were particularly outraged after CW’s dystopian teen drama The 100 killed off a beloved character in March. In response, they formed LGBT Fans Deserve Better, an initiative that has continued to track the deaths of lesbian and bisexual female characters, and has raised more than $150,000 for The Trevor Project, which provides a 24-hour, toll-free crisis hotline and other services for LGBTQ youth. In an intro to the report, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis wrote that “the decision to kill these characters in droves sends a toxic message about the worth of queer female stories,” adding that LGBTQ characters should have “the same opportunities for romance, nuanced motivation, developed back story and the same odds of death” as their straight, cisgender counterparts. And while overall bisexual representation increased on broadcast and streaming networks, GLAAD says it continues to see harmful tropes played out around characters who identify as bisexual, often portraying them as manipulative or untrustworthy. The report notes that these traits factored into unsettling character deaths on shows including ABC’s The Catch and Fox’s Empire.Bisexual women outnumber bisexual men across platforms; out of 21 characters identified as bisexual, only five are men. But GLAAD praised CW’s musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Freeform’s Shadowhunters for depicting bisexual male characters whose stories dispel negative stereotypes.GLAAD says the number of transgender characters has more than doubled since last year. Out of 16 transgender characters, three are on broadcast networks, none of which had shows with transgender characters last year. That means transgender characters will appear across all platforms. The report cites Amazon’s Transparent as the most LGBTQ-inclusive series. GLAAD notes that the dramedy, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as a 70-year-old transgender woman, features two other transgender characters (both played by transgender actors) and three other characters identified as LGBT.By Bethonie Butler – The Washington Post Advertisement Advertisement Twitter The group began tracking more comprehensive diversity data in 2005, and this year’s report also identifies record-high percentages of black characters and characters with disabilities. But the group offers a mixed assessment of overall LGBTQ representation for the 2016-2017 TV season.GLAAD reports that lesbian representation “decreased dramatically” from 33 per cent last year to 17 per cent this year. The exception is on streaming networks, where lesbians account for the majority of LGBTQ character representation.center_img GLAAD cites record-high LGBTQ representation in its annual report on television diversity, but the media advocacy group says that television “failed queer women” this year, killing off a staggering number of lesbian and bisexual female characters. The annual “Where We Are on TV” report has analyzed the presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer characters on prime-time broadcast and cable television for more than two decades. Last year, the group began tracking characters in first-run scripted series released by streaming networks Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. This year’s report, released Thursday, cites the highest-ever percentage of LGBTQ characters on broadcast television.Out of the five major broadcast networks, ABC has the highest percentage (7.3 per cent) of LGBTQ characters who are series regulars. Fox follows at 6.4 per cent, larger than the overall broadcast percentage of 4.8 per cent. Login/Register With: Facebook Advertisementlast_img

Then he did it again. And again. And again. He eventually carded a 13 on the hole — tied for the worst score on any hole in Masters history — on his way to finishing a gruesome 9-over par.
