County assessor sues board for giving 49ers big property tax cut on Levi’s Stadium

first_imgSAN JOSE — Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone is suing an assessment board that gave the 49ers a multimillion-dollar property tax break he says shortchanged local governments and school districts.Stone filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the assessment appeals board’s decision to slash the 49ers’ annual property tax bill for Levi’s Stadium by $6 million and give the football team an immediate refund of $36 million — retroactive to August 2014 — from the Santa Clara Unified School District, …last_img

Investment in SA growing: Manuel

first_img8 December 2003Despite the stagnation of global markets, total investment in South Africa grew by more than 8% in the first half of this year, continuing the momentum achieved in the latter half of 2002, which saw an increase of 9%.Private investment expanded by 7% in the same period, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel told an investment forum of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Johannesburg last month. With net private capital flows expected to top the US$110-billion mark this year – the highest level since the mid-1990s – South Africa is “well-placed to capture a substantial share of this to channel into economic growth and development”, Manuel said. And together with more impressive numbers like the 15 quarters of uninterrupted growth in investment spending and 18 quarters of uninterrupted growth in gross domestic product (GDP), the picture gets even rosier.South Africans have also been able to diversify their savings and earnings, said Manuel, which has helped spur investment in the domestic economy. However, Manuel said South Africa still had a number of challenges to overcome to increase the pace of investment, adding that the rate of investment had to rise from the current levels of around 16% of GDP in order for the country to experience more rapid growth, development and poverty reduction.“Sustained growth, job creation and poverty alleviation demands that we invest more”, he said. “Investment in our people, our infrastructure and our private sector to achieve more rapid growth and rising incomes lies at the heart of our policies.”Increased levels of investment could be achieved by dipping into the global savings pool, he said, while a favourable credit rating meant that South Africa could attract foreign savings to meet its investment requirements.“But we also know that the vast majority of our savings for investment must come from our own citizens and corporations.”Manuel said the recently announced financial sector charter, which will see more people having access to financial services, would contribute to greater saving. “Bringing more saving into the formal financial markets, in turn, will increase the pool for allocation to productive investments, greater employment and growth.”He said his medium-term budget policy statement, unveiled in October, set out an agenda for fostering high levels of investment, faster growth and lower unemployment. In the spirit of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad), South Africa’s role in fostering economic development beyond its borders to the rest of the continent was highlighted. But, said Manuel, “sustainable development in Africa is only possible if domestic resources, foreign aid, trade and investment are used efficiently and investment is realised.”Manuel suggested that African governments should put in place enterprise development policies which would help the continent’s private sector to develop and stimulate growth, thereby luring foreign investment. An abundance of natural resources, large labour supplies, and huge potential markets put the developing countries of Africa in a strong position to attract higher levels of investment, he reporterlast_img

Q&A with South Africans working at Doctors Without Borders

first_imgSpanning the globe, the international organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – Doctors Without Borders in English – helps those affected by natural disasters or caught in conflict zones. We profile South Africans working in this organisation, elevating the country’s reputation through the work they do.Claire Waterhouse has been an MSF fieldworker since 2012. She works during the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa in 2015. (Image: Supplied)Compiled by Priya PitamberIn 1971, 13 doctors and journalists in France joined forces to form Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), known in English as Doctors Without Borders. Its aim, reads the MSF website, was to “establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medical aid quickly, effectively and impartially while also speaking out about what they witnessed”.On its founding, it comprised 300 volunteers ranging from nurses to doctors and other staff to help people in distress, both natural and man-made and those caught in the middle of armed conflict.Watch:“MSF remains fiercely independent of both governments and institutions,” reads the website. “MSF also reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.”Today, the MSF has offices in 28 countries, including South Africa. And South Africans in the organisation help raise the country’s profile through the work they do. We talk to four such MSF staff.Claire Waterhouse joined the MSF as a field worker in 2012.Stefan Kruger, a doctor with the MSF, is proud to contribute as a South African to the international community during times of need. (Image: Supplied)Stefan Kruger, 33, is a Cape Town doctor. He has sporadically worked for the MSF since 2012.Anna Cilliers is a professional nurse with the MSF. She travels to South Sudan in June 2013 for a vaccination campaign to reduce the spread of seasonal meningitis. (Image: Supplied)Anna Cilliers, 47, is a nurse and has been with the MSF since 2012. She is responsible for co-ordinating medical activities at project/field level.Midwife Jeanne Rene (Zani) Prinsloo has been with Doctors Without Borders since 2012. She’s travelled to Pakistan, the Philippines, Afghanistan, South Sudan and other countries putting her skills use. (Image: Supplied)Jeanne Rene (Zani) Prinsloo, originally from the Eastern Cape but now living in Johannesburg, is a social worker and a midwife. She has been with the MSF since 2012.Brand South Africa: How did you get into this role?Claire Waterhouse: I had moved back to South Africa from Hong Kong and was looking for a job. MSF caught my eye and luckily, I caught theirs too. They offered me a mission in the Central African Republic for six months and the rest is history.Stefan Kruger: I always had the idea of spending at least a part of my career doing humanitarian work. When the timing was right I followed the normal recruitment process of MSF South Africa.Anna Cilliers: As a young and inexperienced nurse, I was introduced to the work of MSF during the 1980s when I read The Dressing Station by Jonathan Kaplan, where he also writes about his work experiences with MSF in conflict zones. I knew then that I would like to join MSF in the future.I qualified and worked as an intensive care nurse and in 2003 joined international medical humanitarian organisations to work in Iraq and Liberia. In 2007, I returned to South Africa and worked for a few years in Johannesburg with community-based organisations. In 2012, I applied at MSF. My work and life experiences prior to that definitely prepared me for my work with MSF. My first project in June 2013 was as a nurse in South Sudan where we did a vaccination campaign to reduce the spread of seasonal meningitis.Jeanne Rene (Zani) Prinsloo: Two quotes inspired me a great deal:“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhiand“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” – Muhammed AliMy skills, strong sense of humanity and willingness to positively contribute to improving other people’s lives were the motivating factors for me to join MSF.Here I am four years later, still at MSF and I am happy to have made this decision. I also love travelling, so by joining MSF, I am also [able] do that.BSA: How does your work help elevate South Africa’s national profile?CW: There are not that many South Africans in the field, so I hope that when we are seen in the field, it helps to elevate the country’s profile by showing that there are South Africans out there working hard all over the world to make a difference and provide emergency medical care to those who need it most.SK: MSF is a truly multinational organisation and it is part of an international community that cares about some of the greatest tragedies of our time. I love the fact that I get to be a part of it, read more

Would make your hair glimpse ace in seconds. Most affordable ive uncovered and its so uncomplicated to do. Love it would deff advise. Lovely product, it came quickly and was really nice quality, the colour was a good match for my hair. Love Hair Extensions Percilla Drawstring Synthetic Hair Ponytail Colour 18/22 Ash Blonde/beach Blonde 16 -inchAvailable in 7 styles and a drawstring and crocodile clip attachmentAffordable, effective, safe and funTransform your look in minutes!Re-use time and time againMade from premium synthetic fibreI obtain on mu husbands ac and this has been 1 of the very best products and solutions i have purchased in a although. It normally takes me ages to correct my hair as i have thick mid duration wavy hair that i fight with building modern and straight just about every early morning. This product saves me loads of time a pair mornings a 7 days. I pop my hair in a bun and attach this, it truly is that simple. I acquired dim brown but i need to have long gone for jet black. I have extremely darkish brown just about black hair so if you are not sure of the colour and in among i recommed the darker. I have now obtained the black as properly as the straight ponytail. An amazing time saver for functioning mums.Fantastic, a mate came round to place it in for me and i by no means felt i had it in till i shook my head and it felt strange obtaining lengthy hair but did the career as i went to a fancy dress as sandy from grease. This hair piece is superb price for cash, i purchased it for my sisters wedding and it blended in completely with my have hair, not only this but it was pretty effortless to place it on my very own and stayed in position for the whole working day. I have worn it on a number of other occasions since and it is even now in its unique shape.Love Hair Extensions Percilla Drawstring Synthetic Hair Ponytail Colour 18/22 Ash Blonde/beach Blonde 16 -inch : Easy to put in, you don’t notice you’ve even got it in after a while. Simply put your own hair in a ponytail (my own hair is not short just horribly fine) slide one comb under your own ponytail from the top, the second from the bottom, pull the drawstring and slide the toggle up to secure into place. Tuck the drawstring back in under your pony and you’re good to go 😊 a tangle tease and a little mythic oil before being returned to a net and it’s box after wearing is all the attention the ponytail needs to keep it looking great, a small price to pay for for having lustrous locks whenever i choose. Arrived really quickly but when it turned up it was alot darker than the graphic proven. Would look great if i dyed my hair dim dark brown nevertheless. It’s difficult to place into the hair and ends up slipping out even with bobby pins. Somewhat dissatisfied to be truthful. This ponytail its not the greatest i experienced. It is to shiny to pass for your very own hair. Nevertheless, it has beautiful colour, texture and size. I have not attempt to spray it with some dry shampoo or toddler powder, as people today say that it will take out the glow. Usually the support and the shipping brief and great. Looks and feels like real hair. I have purchased a selection of these hairpieces. They are so easy to use and are a lifesaver on bad hair times. My hair is very dim brown i have to obtain the black to colour match.last_img

Google Now Offering Google Apps Certification

first_imgGoogle announced the Google Apps Certification Program today. The program will certify IT professionals who have demonstrated the ability to sell, deploy, develop and support Google Apps. The first certification is the Goolge Apps Certified Deployment Specialist, “which certifies IT professionals who have demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills required to migrate to, configure, and deploy Google Apps.”The certification is completely Web-based. Anyone with a browser can take the online exam. According to the announcement, “It is available in English now, and will soon be available in additional languages.” It costs $100. The suggested prerequisites are:Before taking the exam, it is recommended that a candidate have a minimum of 3-6 years of professional IT experience, and complete at least 3 Google Apps for Business deployments. The deployments should require some technical complexity and significant data integration and migration work. You should be experienced with the use of Google Apps Directory Sync and server side migration tools, such as Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange. As Google continues to compete with Microsoft in the enterprise, a certification program is a logical step for helping organizations find qualified consultants. It already offers a developer certification program.Although certification is frequently criticized within the IT world, those that receive certifications typically have an easier time finding work. PV Sindhu hopeful of winning gold at BWF World Championships

first_imgIndian ace P V Sindhu said she is confident of striking gold at the World championship in August after settling for the silver medal twice in the last two editions.”Yes, last two times it was silver in the World championship. I am hopeful of winning the gold this time,” Sindhu, who finished runner-up in the last two editions of the world championship, said.”It is one of the biggest tournaments and nobody is going to give it away easily. It is just about giving my best. Everybody is aiming for Tokyo 2020 and there are many good players and its not going to be easy.Sindhu on All England Badminton Championships The next big event for Sindhu will be the All England Championship, a tournament last won by her mentor and chief national coach Pullela Gopichand in 2001.It would be a great chance for Sindhu to end India’s 18-year jinx at the tournament, considering three-time World Champion Carolina Marin is not playing due to the knee injury sustained during the Indonesia Masters final last month.”Even though Carolina is not playing, it is not going to be easy. There are very good players from China, Japan, Thailand. The top-15 ranked players are on the same level,” Sindhu said.”Sometimes you might play brilliantly, give more than 100 percent, but might make few unforced errors. Sometimes your mind might not work, the strategy might not work,” she added.Sindhu, who was here to launch Mission Sports, an organisation committed to providing high-quality sports, said her focus is to remain physically fit.advertisement”It depends whether you are able to give your 100 percent or not. For me, every tournament is to give it my all and it’s important to stay focused and remain physically fit,” she said.”It is not about just participating and coming back. It is about discussing the situation with the coach and picking the tournaments and choosing which ones to play and which ones to skip,” she added.Sindhu talks up Senior National ChampionshipSindhu, who will play in the Senior National Championship in Guwahati said the event would bring to the fore the country’s badminton standard.”I think we get to see a lot of young players and previously I have seen that there are many youngsters who have good skills,” she said.”It will be a good opportunity for them to play against us and us getting to see them. I think the Nationals will help us to see the standard of badminton in India,” she added. Also Read | Step by step: Carolina Marin starts recovery after knee surgeryAlso Read | All England 2019: Gopichand banks on Saina, Sindhu, Srikanth to end title droughtAlso Read | Marriage has been a lucky charm: Saina NehwalAlso See:last_img

The Bucks were the best team in the East last season but they lost to Leonard and the Toronto Raptors in the Conference finals. Leonard’s in the West now, which means their biggest challengers in the East are an oddly-constructed Philadelphia 76ers team and whatever the post-Kyrie Boston Celtics end up being. The bad news? They may end up facing Leonard again eventually. The Clippers will have a tougher road to the finals, but if they make it they will have a clear advantage over whoever comes out of the East. HFPhiladelphia 76ers 4-3 LA Clippers. The superteam era may be over but Philadelphia may have the closest thing resembling one. The Sixers lost Jimmy Butler in free agency but added Josh Richardson and the still-underrated Al Horford to a lineup that includes Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris. This is a team that’s built their identity around size, versatility and defense and one of the few outfits equipped to counter the Clippers’ two superstar wings. One year after pushing Kawhi and the Raptors to the limit in a seven-game Eastern Conference semi-final thriller, look for Philadelphia to go further and capture their first NBA title since 1983. BAGLA Clippers 4-2 Milwaukee Bucks. With the Warriors’ dominance drawing to a close, this season feels like one of the hardest to predict. The star power is heavy across the league but so are the issues. The Clippers, Warriors and Nets have injury issues, the Lakers and Bucks have short rotations and the 76ers and Nuggets are still green. Equipped with the best stars and the strongest supporting cast, the Clippers are essentially my pick by default. DPLA Clippers 4-3 Philadelphia 76ers. Leonard and George are going to be an incredible duo, and they’re going to be hungry. Coached by Doc Rivers, this team is going to go far. As for the 76ers, it’s quite tough to bet against a team that added Horford to a roster with Simmons and Embiid. It will be an exciting series, with the Clippers coming out on top. MR Zion Williamson has this one locked up if – and it turns out this could be a big if – he’s healthy and doesn’t miss more time once he’s back from the knee surgery that has ruled him out for the start of the season. Expect the New Orleans Pelicans to be extremely cautious with the Future of the Franchise, but here’s hoping that we aren’t denied what could be a rookie season of the ages. HFZion Williamson’s bully ball won’t immediately translate to the NBA, so I expect the No 1 pick to endure some growing pains as a rookie. He’s also surrounded by an intriguing mix of young and veteran talent, which could make it difficult for him to stand out even if he plays 30 minutes a night. Instead look to Ja Morant, who put up PlayStation-like numbers at Murray State and will get plenty of opportunity running the point for the rebuilding Memphis Grizzlies. BAGZion Williamson. A rare lock in a season that is otherwise impossible to predict. Williamson’s game is built for New Orleans, a team full of young guards who are sure to get up and down the floor.
